Newish Toshiba may have virus?

Hi
My brother bought my mum a new laptop for Xmas (he actually bought it in November as her other one had packed up). It is a Toshiba (not sure of model etc as I don't have it with me). Yesterday morning when she switched it on she noticed that she couldn't see the cursor anywhere and attached a mouse. Then she realised she couldn't open any web pages (even though she was connected to the Internet).

Long story short, my brother took it back to PC world today and they fixed the cursor problem (don't know what was wrong, they didn't say). However, they have said that the web page problems may be a virus or software problem, which they do not cover. Is there any way we can find out what the problem is ourselves (as we cannot get on to the Internet). Any ideas or advice gratefully received. (I will not actually have the laptop until tomorrow though).
:)

    virus scan it

system restore it, or factory restore it

    most pc problems aren't viruses.

there's not enough information to diagnose the problem

  • She has Kaspersky Internet security on it, should we just run a scan with that?

Sorry for the lack of info, I'm just going by what she has told me over the phone :o

if kaspersky could detect something, it would have picked it up anyway (ie a manual scan isn't really needed)

you could run a scan with malwarebytes, but the likelihood is it's nothing to do with a virus.

  • Thanks again.

Could someone point me in the direction of the system restore function...... where would I find t? Do I have to go into the Control Panel (I think the laptop has Windiws 8).

    TIA :)
  • Thank you for that, I will try this later when I go to mum's. How do I bring that page up, what menu is it under on windows 8 do you know? (Excuse my ignorance....... I'm a windows xp dinosaur)!

    Thanks :)
  • Hi

Thanks for that link but I may be being extremely thick, I cannot understand any of it! I just need to know what I have to press or go into to get to the start up menu?

    Sorry :o
