Defaults definitely drop off your report after six years. Non-defaulted accounts appear for six years from the settlement date.

  • I second the post a few up, why would you want to start getting back into debt given you've proven not to be able to handle it in the past? Why would you want to move from your admirable debt-free position back into owing the man?

Do it the old fashioned way and save and spend your own money.

I recommend you submit a query to all three CRA's and ask for the default to be removed based on the fact that the default date is well over 6 years. If acknowledged I would also consider asking for an explanation as to why this wasn't removed after six years.
  • Not all 'debt' is cut and dry and means that i was irresposible, relationships breakdown and someone has to take responisbility for whats left. I was that person.

I wasn't nearly bankrupt - I was making a point that if i had decalred myself bankrupt then I would have cleared my debt quicker and therefore potentially would now be able to be on a mortgage.

Thanks everyone for your input over the defaults, I will defiantely contact the CRA's and ask them to be removed. Would I also need to contact the banks involved?

    Thanks for your help.

If there are really defaults recorded, then the CRAs should have automatically removed them. It is their responsibility, so you complain to them.

Can you post up a screenshot of the report entry with personal details removed?

It seems odd that more than one CRA has left these, which suggests something a bit more odd is going on.

  • Apologies, Ive just checked (hadnt since November as Ive been away in December) and they have all cleared from my accounts :D Thank you for suggesting I look!!

Both Equifax and Experian are now showing that I have all green's, no adverse factors on my credit files. I feel a bit weird now!

What does this actually mean? Is it as simple as it's a clean slate (not for me to get dirty again obviously) but does it mean that I can start to move on?

If i were, with my husband to now look for a mortgage, do I have to declare old defaults or do I just let them credit check me?

Thanks again for your help, I feel a bit of a plum now!!

I would say that you have a clean slate now. I don't have a mortgage so not sure what questions they ask, but if they ask you if you have any defaults or have ever defaulted I would say no. There's nothing on your credit record anymore so should be fine.
