WTC hours help please

Me, dh and 1 toddler in the household. I'm not working. Dh is starting a new job this week. He will be on a 23.5hr contract, so half hr a week less than needed. However, he will be travelling 1.5 hrs each way and doing full days training for the next 4 weeks at much more than 23.5hrs.

What will happen re: WTC? Will the hours be averaged out over the remaining tax year so we qualify, or will it just be the contracted hours that counts?

How much will he earn, and what will this tax year's total be? If it's over around £16k it may not make any difference. Otherwise, assuming he's on more than NMW, could he not volunteer to work an extra 30 mins for no extra pay and get a 24h contract?

He'll be on nmw. I think inc wages from previous job it'll be 14.5k. The training will all be paid hours, travel time might be paid as it's so far from his usual place of work but not sure yet.

Could you - or your husband - take a part time, self employed job for an hour or two each week? That would then take you, as a couple, over the 24 hours mark. As long as one of the couple works 16 hours then the 24 hours minimum requirement can be met by a combination of hours worked by both.

why not look at mystery shopping as you should be able to pick up 1 job a week, as this would cover the half hour.

If it's 'away' from his normal place of work, his travel costs should generally be met by his employer.

I still don't know about the travelling time being paid yet, but he definitely will do over 24 even without travel for 4 weeks
