Greasy Hair Misery.

Is it oil or a waxy like substance?
Recently I had a build up on my scalp, and my hairdresser said it was because of the silicone ingredients in most shampoos nowadays.
I also found that some shampoos for greasy hair cause the hair to produce even more sebum and get more greasy, and a more natural shampoo helps me.0 -

Yes I would describe it to feel waxy. Almost like if I put my hair up in a pony tail, it would look firm and most definitely noticible that something was in my hair.
Even noticed that my pillowcase feels greasy, from where my head has been.
The 2 main shampoos I have alternated with are head & shoulder citrus fresh & tresemme deep cleanse clarifying shampoo. I'm now online looking at new shampoo's & if it doesn't work, I am going to try mouthwash as another poster recommended. I am willing to try anything right now.0 -
I am in my thirties and since my late teens, I have suffered with greasy hair. Many years ago I used to use a product that I found in Boots (Yellow Shampoo with chinese writing- If anyone can remember it?) then head & shoulders brought out their citrus fresh for 'greasy hair' and it dealt with my problem.
For the last 3 months, after I wash my hair it terribly greasy. My hair at the ends is dry, but my scalp looks like I have run margarine through itToday I was getting ready to go out tonight. I washed my hair and went to style it. It was greasy and looked so bad. So bad that I asked my husband if we could leave going out, because it really did look dreadful. I have rewashed my hair but its made no difference.
Does anyone know of a product that will shift the grease please? I am feeling low and it does effect me.
Sometimes switching products helps. Your hair can get used to one particular product.
First off I would find a clarifying shampoo, or a "before colour" shampoo. Use this to clean all the crud off your hair which includes conditioner that has been left on the hair follicle.
Then switch to a different shampoo and conditioner. OR don't use conditioner at all. I have found that olive oil shampoo (this is an ethnic hair product, if you have any hair shops targeted at African hair look there) doesn't need conditioner. My hair is very thick and for my whole life I wouldn't have dreamt of not using conditioner. Now I use it once a month after dyeing my hair. Olive oil shampoo cleans my hair and I can still easily get a brush through not problems.0 -

I had a large patch of wax deposit just above my temple, it was disgusting. I had the same problem on my pillowcase, I put it down to using a mild detergent, but maybe it was the silicone from my head.
Yuk!
Baby shampoo is very delicate, doesn't irritate the scalp and doesn't have silicone.
I use this one:http://www.biggreensmile.com/products/nature-babycare-eco-shampoo/natybabysham.aspx?productid=natybabysham
Next time I'll try this as it's cheaper (right now 66p at S's)

Try switching shampoos regularly and my wife swears by Pantene Prov clariftying shampoo. She uses it ever so often to get rid of any build up and give the hair a good clean.0

Make sure you're not using water that's too hot - that can over-stimulate oil production. I also wonder if you're over-rinsing.0

Definitely seems like silicone to me. I have fine hair and greasy scalp and my hair always seemed greasy and flat to my head. Sometimes when I looked at the roots it looked like a had a patch of oily residue on my scalp - it was almost yellow!
To get rid of this I had to deep cleanse (shampooing twice) - really massaging the shampoo into my roots, then after rinsing, I rinsed again with an apple cider vinegar, lime juice and water rinse. Clarifying shampoos can make your hair dry though so you may need to condition (try and find one without silicones again). When I was desperate I used a bicarb of soda rinse but this stripped my natural oils too so not something I would recommend. Superdrug used to do an amazing hair mud mask that got rid of the residue easily whilst not killing my hair but I think it is discontinued now.
I now use these shampoos in rotation and it stops the gunk coming back:
Faith in Nature (from Holland & Barratt)
Lush (they contain SLS but not silicones)
Johnson's Baby Shampoo (SLS but no cones)
MOP C system (I get from TK Maxx)"I am not a vegetarian because I love animals; I am a vegetarian because I hate plants." A. Whitney Brown0 -
I suffer with really greasy hair and was having to wash it every day and more. My hairdresser suggested using baby shampoo and it appears to have worked- i then try and use bastiste dry shampoo every other day. So at the moment I only have to wash it every other day! I tried tgel but that was far too thick for my hair and just stuck in it.Savings target: £10,000 by December 2015!Total so far: £3470.00 = 34.7%

I have a similar problem. I tried something recently that really helped though... olive oil. I just plastered it on, rubbed it in well and put a plastic bag on my head. I left it as long as I could, then gave it a good wash with normal shampoo - it took several lots of shampoo to get it all out. I didn't condition after.
Since then I've been washing it normally, but it seems to last that bit longer before it starts getting greasy. I'm going to have another go soon, see if I get extend it any more!Shrinking my mortgage!
