Payment when ordering glasses

I have used the local branch of Specsavers for years, but over the last year or so I have become dissatisfied with their service, mostly relating to payment of contact lenses and glasses.
Previously you ordered contact lenses and you paid for them when they were arrived at the shop usually 2-4 days.
They then changed this so you had to pay for them at the time of ordering and they posted a notice in the shop informing everyone, but this was usually a payment of £23 for a month’s supply, so not a large amount of money to hand over.
At the beginning of last year I ordered new glasses and paid a deposit upfront and the remainder when the glasses were ready, Later on in the year my wife needed new glasses but now they ask for full price at the time of ordering your glasses, nothing displayed in the shop informing you of this, and having to pull out the full price of £180 at the time of ordering I do not think is fair.
We had to sit through a process of someone trying to sell her more expensive lens solutions when we just wanted the basic lenses, then to find they wanted full payment I did not have enough money with me so had to leave.
I am always reluctant to hand over full payment for anything I order, you would not do this when ordering a TV or furniture would you.
Does anyone know are they correct in doing this, there was nothing displayed in the shop informing that you needed to make full payment, I had asked them for their terms and conditions on payment, but they have not produced this.

TVs and furniture are not usually made to special order, unlike new glasses from an optician. Very often, not always, you have to wait some time for furniture to be delivered but I believe many places do take full payment prior to delivery if you are not paying in instalments.
Specsavers usually have glasses available for collection within about a week, don't they. The difference between paying on Day 1 and Day 7 (or thereabouts), doesn't make much difference.
Do you pay for everything with cash?
I do not see why Specsavers need to put a notice in their window to say full payment needs to be made at the time of ordering.0 -
This is becoming the norm at Opticians, due to people not collecting their glasses. If you pay in full you are much more likely to actually collect them.
A small deposit doesn't cover the cost of manufacture, so in this case if you don't collect them, the lenses (which are unique to your frame choice and prescription) end up in the bin at a loss for the business.0 -
The local branches of Specsavers I've used have had notices up advising this for at least 6 years.0
