getting rid of ford focus

wonder if anyone has done this and can help or if there are any dealers on here who can provide their thoughts on the matter?

got a hire purchase on a ford focus which I'm sick to death of and I've paid easily more than half the term on it

eyed up a much better car, and looking at a part ex (when I say part ex I'm happy if I can get approx. 80%+ of my hire purchase paid off and I'll pay the rest), now in my younger more foolish days I decided I wanted an amazing stereo in the focus so I put an aftermarket in, - I still maintain it sounds absolutely great but there's wiring instead of the glove box, and it's not an altogether "pro " job though I am proud of the switches I put on the facia which light up when you turn the various speakers on etc, that does look pro, the glovebox looks a mess. if my front end doesn't appeal easy way is to get a factory double din unit, put that back in.

question is this: has anyone done a part ex on a modded car and said to the chap "look I appreciate you're going to mark me down a bit because you want it back sellable to normal run of the mill people who don't want a big fat sub in the back " etc... and then taken a £100-£300 hit just to get the thing taken off your hands quickly.

Perfectly happy to fulfil that side of the bargain, just wondering what anyone (dealers in particular) think - would you take a part ex on a perfectly well run well serviced motor at a little mark down to appreciate you've got a bit of work you need to do on the interior?

Cheers to all. Andy

Depends on the age of the car as to whether whoever is going to retail it feels it needs to be returned to "standard".

Why not either remove the gear yourself or have someone do it for you, then theres no reason to accept less for the car?

Do you still have the glove box to put it back to standard? Some places may think booming stereo equals a car run ragged.

As well as it being modded, you say yourself the job looks not altogether pro. That really will mean a proper trader will either refuse to take it altogether or offer you such a price that it comes in at nothing to him when compared to the car he is selling you. Get it back to as normal looking as possible before you show it to anyone, the best trade-ins are those that look, albeit older, as if they've just came out of the showroom: Everything original and nothing extra. Nobody cares if you've been to Blackpool and your gearchanges aren't any quicker with a chrome gearknob.
  • there's wiring instead of the glove box, and it's not an altogether "pro " job ...............the glovebox looks a mess.

If I saw that on a car - I would wonder what else had been botched !
  • yeah could (should) do it myself but it's just time isn't it - busy job busy life.

Bit of plastic I need on ebay goes for £24.99 and then I have a glovebox again

but then there's the aftermarket stereo and speakers in the doors, which are good, expensive speakers

I think it's a self funding proiect though with perhaps a little margin in it, sell the great alpine head unit, and the rest if I can, use that to fund the parts I need on ebay including a 6000CD. The pain in the neck would be working out if it's worth taking the speakers out or not, I'd think not - just sell on a factory looking car with very nice hidden speakers, cut the loss.

Time permitting this is probably what I should do

The dealer wont want to resell it unless he sells crappy cars anyway.

VT wont be an option either. So you dont have much choice. Sell it privately or accept whatever the dealer offers.
But make sure they look at the vehicle and are not assuming that its a standard one with the price.

maybe I do the work and private sale is better price, thankfully I have the resources to pay off the hire purchase completely if needed. What i'll end up doing if I do this is get a confirmed buyer before I do it though otherwise I'd rather not do this layout.Am aware you can't sell cars not paid off so is a bit of a back to front way of doing things but I'll have the car bought before I have the car sold in other words if I get a buyer I'll settle it in full and then do the sale but not until

loved the stereo but it's got to go, lovely sounding alpine CDE-123R about to hit ebay I think

thanks for your advice chaps, I imagined it'd be something along these lines. motor only has 70k so it's not that ancient, I'm just sick to death of it, and its breaking plastic engine and want a better ride on my daily commute!
