over 70 license renewal

My cousin has to renew her driving license this April when she will be 70. She is out of the country just now and will be till July/August. She spends most winters abroad, poor soul. She phoned and asked me if she doesn't renew her license till she comes home will the new one start from her birthday or her renewal date. She would prefer the latter as it would mean that in future years she would more likely be in the country at renewal time. As her husband drives the minor inconvenience of not driving for a couple of months would not bother her as much as trying to renew her license every 3 years whilst she is abroad. I have googled for an answer with no success. Anybody here know the answer?
