Is your Shower trap complete? I.e. is the tube that creates the trap in place properly, going by your explanation it might be missing, this diagram may help you it shows how the trap is created in this style of trapBORN TO RIDE - FORCED TO DRIVE

You may have cracked it - I 'm pretty sure it is just the outer cylinder with the plastic/chrome cover on top...
Is the inner cylinder usually removable then??0 -
Yes, you are missing the inner removable cylinder from the trap and, as a result there is no water in there to block the smell. You might find a cylinder that will fit, or replace the trap (which I would do).
You at least have access (albeit difficult). It looks like you've got solvent weld piping under there, so you may need a new bit of pipe and a join. If not, a simple replacement trap will do. As soon as you've found a successful replacement, buy a second! They do fail (split, or just get so gunged up ), having a second you know will fit (and allow you to leave the other in bleach and limescale remover whilst you can carry on showering).
The cylinder is removable for cleaning and freeing debris (toenails, hair, spit... need I go on?). It seems some people remove them, think "Oh, that seems to still work" and carry on regardless. When they get a bit limescaley, the cylinder is difficult to replace flush, so the chrome cover doesn't fit on either... so easy solution is to not fit it!0
