Have you considered a laser printer? Usually get more pages out of a toner cartridge.

    Toner: http://tonersandinks.com/HPLJPROP1102?gclid=CO_FzuPG-LsCFSbHtAodiCoAgg

£20.99 inc VAT for approx 1,600 pages.

Laser printers tend to print much faster too.

First tell us what you need to print: b/w, 4 colour, how many copies a month...?
As in post 2, a b/w budget laser is far cheaper than an inkjet.

An inkjet with that pattern of use will soon clog up with dried ink on the print heads, unless you remember to run it once a week or so.
I'd forgo the colour and go for a budget mono laser, the Samsung models are excellent, and very compact.

Also will she want to scan/copy things? Small cheap printers only print.
You can get a cheap printer/scanner, look at Argus sale couple there for under £30 and get some non branded cartridges.
  • Laser printers have dramatically reduced in price and most compatible toner cartridges now have the same print quality as the more expensive OEM cartridges.

Another advantage is toner cartridges contain powder so the don't dry out unlike ink cartridges.

Take a look at the sprint-ink.co.uk website, their blog has some interesting articles on this subject.

Although I keep a laser for very long jobs, since I switched our older HP to a Epson "WorkForce Pro" WP-4025 inkjet printer, it's rarely used and nice not having the small office smelling of ozone too.

The Epson is a big beast (but you can also get it with a scanner on top. My primary requirements with total reliability (it's a home office), good running costs and fast speed. It lives up to all these. £130 inc. VAT.

It starts up instantly, no charging the ink or wasting it for ages (unlike HP Enterprise printers I've tested). Probably not quite as sharp as my older HP, but I'm being very picky.

The XL cartridges (black for example) official ones (not cheaper third party) from CatridgeSave.co.uk are £21+VAT but last for 2400+ pages, I print a lot of test documents, brochures, yet other months I might not hardly print anything at all, and I'm still on the starter set of cartridges and have had it for over a 14 months.
