Wing Yip is the place, the big Chinese supermarket chain.I'm not sure where they all are but there are branches in London,Manchester and B'ham.
They have a website(sorry don't know how to do links).Someone mentioned this about 3 weeks ago on this forum,so the link is somewhere about.
My mum bought me a 3 kg bucket of bicarb and a 5 litre container of white vinegar from the B'ham branch. Not sure of exact price, but it came to about £6 inc. vat.She thought the shop was marvellous-lots of other bargains and helpful staff. :j
Incidentally, she brought the bicarb over yesterday and it got its first use in the night. My dd was sick, and I sprinkled liberal amounts on the carpet to absorb the smell0 -
Thanks thriftlady. I've checked their locations and they are located nowhere near me. However it has given me the idea to try a new chinese supermarket that's opened locally.
thanks for the idea!0 -
The staff in chinese supermarkets are alway friendly I find, so you should be able to get load of bargains!! My last 5lts of vinegar cost me £3 and my 3kg bag of bicarb was about £2.50 I think, so it is value for money.
I also but my rice and sauces in there. Catering size tubs of tomato sauce and mayo work out very cheaply as does a 3 - 5 kg bag of rice.0 -
Makro does large tubs of bicarb as well. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0

I bought a box of bicarb in boots think it cost around £1.500

Hoo Hing.com sell bicarb and distilled vinegar in bulk sizes ( £2-3 for 3kg bicarb and same for 5l vinegar). They are offering free delivery on orders over £30 at the moment, which is handy if you want any other chinese groceries at the same time.
Hope it's ok to post this -it's not a referral, just something I found after reading the start of this thread.

yep, chinese markets are brilliant for all kinds of bargains, plus while you're there why not try a few of their foods?
daikon is nice it's a long white radish with a mild taste, great in stirfry
pakchoy (or bokchoy) also known as chinese cabbage not really cabbage tasting more 'green' and lovely
if you like seaweed or don't mind slightly salty slightly fishy things you could try the dried seaweed, it's soooo healthy for you
and of course soy sauce! soooo much cheaper
we used to go to one in glasgow that even sold woks and such like
the sweets though, they're a bit ...odd but you might like them who knows!
i like being adventurous so i always try something new when i visit any ethnic grocer
that reminds me, we have two good sized ones sort of across the road diagnonally from each other on leith walk (edinburgh) so i 'm going to have to go down and check out what bargains i can find there, i keep forgetting about them!founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0
