Starting seeds off indoors

Is it too early to start tomato/other seeds off indoors?

  • Depends, if you have a heated greenhouse sow from mid-January to early February

I don't start my toms indoors until early March; I just don't have the space to be keeping anything indoors for longer than necessary. As soon as it warms up sufficiently I transfer them to the unheated greenhouse, then harden off and plant out usually latter half of May. The light's just not right this time of year unless you have access to something artificial.

Thanks for your replies. I lost my greenhouse in the recent storms so I'm planning on trying to grow them in my veg patch, so was unsure when to start them off.

I agree with the others. If you start them off too early then they risk getting leggy and weak with insufficient light indoors. Don't forget you'll need to keep them indoors until the planting out time (likely May - June depending on your UK location). Later sowings will catch up and be sturdier plants.

I was going to start herb seeds in peatpellets until my husband pointed out that we'd run out of windowsill before the frosts had retreated.

So, another month planning the herb garden!
