Hi,

I plan on declaring my car SORN at the end of the month when my tax disc expires and as my dads license is sent away to police and waiting for it to return.

on https://www.gov.uk/register-sorn-statutory-off-road-notification

it says It’s an offence to keep a motor vehicle without insurance unless you’ve surrendered your tax disc to make a SORN.

my tax disc expires on 31/01/2014 and i believe mot expires the same day? also my insurance runs out mid feb

do i need to return my tax disc even if its expired? do i need to tell my insurance company my car is SORN? another thing

if i get MOT done now and say after 2 months if i want to get back into the road, can i just buy insurance and go to post office and get a tax disc and start driving straight away? or will i need to re do the MOT test since my car has been declared SORN does anyone know thanks

    Yes and Yes...

I would MOT it now to make it easier to put back on the road. Just Insure and tax sorted.

sorry but do i need to return the expired tax disc to dvla? also do i need to inform my insurance company?
  • No, if your tax disc expires 31/01/2014 you do not need to return the disc. You can take your in-date reminder to the Post Office and they will SORN your car. You do not have any time left on the disc to file for a refund. If the disc had more time on it (expires 28/02/14 or later) you would need to request a V14 (online or at Post Office), declare the vehicle SORN and would be able to apply for a refund of any remaining months.

If you do SORN your vehicle and then get the MOT sorted and wish to put the car back on the road you will need to take your V5C, proof of MOT and insurance to the Post Office and they will tax your car accordingly.

You don't even need to go to the post office - you can do it all online when you get the reminder through the post - all the details are on there. I've just done this with a motorbike and it was very simple.

Nope. Just use the tax disc reminder to SORN it online, instead of buying a tax disc. End of.

    Yep.

No, the MOT is valid until the expiry date on the certificate. If the MOT expires whilst the car's SORNed, you can drive it to and from a pre-booked test, legally, so long as it's insured.

I'll be doing precisely that this week, with one that I took off the road at the end of November for some work for the MOT.
