i recently noticed ive been getting charged £100 a mth for going over my overdraft by £9.50,and it has now, after checking cost me over £1000,i was under the belief that when my wages went in the money would be taken and debt cleared but no they take the £100 charges and leave the £9.50p instead of taking this as well they leave this on the account which then occurs a £5 a day charge up to a max £100 a mth,im shocked!....i approached the bank santander, and they said as a good will gesture they would clear this of which they did indeed cleared the £100 charges and yet again left the £9.50 debt which yet again occurs a daily charge of £5 ,so i havnt got anywhere with them which now is causing me great concern,im at my tether...if any one has any suggestions?, could you please e mail me some information on how i go about getting this stopped as i say i only just noticed but after checking they have pilferred well over £1000 from my account in charges:money: many thanks

The first thing I would suggest is that you click the edit button and remove your email. It's much better if posters who have any advice reply in the normal way, via the forum.0

,im shocked!...
Why? it will be in their published tariff that is periodically sent to you.i approached the bank santander, and they said as a good will gesture they would clear this of which they did indeed cleared the £100 charges and yet again left the £9.50 debt which yet again occurs a daily charge of £5 ,so i havnt got anywhere with them which now is causing me great concern
It is common for banks to let you off on a first time error. However, they are unlikely to continue doing it.could you please e mail me some information
That isnt how it works. Indeed, you should remove your email address to avoid being spammed. Discussion boards work by people posting on the discussion threads..if any one has any suggestions?
How about paying some money into the account to bring it back into credit? Also, read your bank statements in future as they will tell you future dates that charges will be made.
Best not to use that tone. After all, it was you that took money from them without permission in the first place. So, using your tone, you pilfered from them.they have pilferred well over £1000 from my account in charges
Bank charges are largely a voluntary charge you pay. You avoid them by not spending money you do not have. So, that is the best thing to do. If you are in difficulty then contact Santander again and ask them to explain to you how spending money has an impact on your balance (such as clearing cycle etc).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). If you owed them 9.50 after they had refunded the charges, why didn't you pay this off ? It's your fault the charges have carried on as you still owe the 9.50 ! They refunded £100, not £109.50, it's not difficult !0

Hi, you're not alone, the exact thing happened to me very recently, also with Santander, the only difference being that on one of my two accounts I managed to get all of the £385 back I'd paid so far and all pending and future charges cancelled. Initially I sent a letter to the complaints Dept. using the template on here, then I received a phone call from the Complaints Manager to discuss my complaint. I think it definitely helped that I am currently on a Debt Management plan and that due to their charges I'd defaulted on my last three payments. I'd also set up alerts to receive a text message if my account balance fell below £50 so that I could keep a closer eye on it, only I stopped receiving them for whatever reason, and had no idea until I noticed the charges when I looked at my statement one day. So on this occasion they were refunded due to 'a Santander error!' I also asked them about a further £200 on my second account but due the amount in total, I was told authorisation would be needed from higher up so I am waiting to find out on Tuesday, fingers crossed! On the other hand I was rather shocked with their response as they had already refunded a similar amount back in august. I'll let you know how I get on with the other account as soon as. Good luck!

Yes. It would mean they would consider your circumstances under financial hardship. Although it can also go against you in some cases as the fact you are on a managed plan would usually mean the repayments are set to an affordable level and not leave you in hardship. So, it can go both ways.
Santander are actually really good at considering refunds on charges. They wont suffer fools lightly but they will consider fairly and listen to what you have to say.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
