I did :j I plumped for the Janome 525s.:D I can't wait to get started on it. The shop I brought it from, also offer sewing classes, so I'm going to a few of those to get to know and understand my machine.

Thank you all for your advice, I really appreciate it. xx:)

Enjoy the classes .....and then have lots of fun with your new machine! I'm sure you will find that it is money very well spent.

I'm sure I will, thank you Katiehound. I've spent this afternoon learning the stitches it does. I've still got 12 stitches to go through, it's going to take some time to learn and get a feel for the foot pedal speed. I am so tempted to just have a go though and make something simple. lol.. I'm keen to do something!

Well, what about sewing a simple sampler using the fancy or "working" stitches and changing the colour of the thread and then making it into a little bag? I would just use the material double for a bit of stability.
That way you can see what difference the stitch length makes, get the hang of controlling the pedal etc. I think you are allowed to play! Seriously 'though it does pay dividends to be able to use as many stitches as possible because you learn their uses and also the ones you think you will use the most. Time very well spent.
When I got my new machine (erm.. . back in the dark ages!) I tried out all the embroidery stitches so chef aprons would have embroidered pockets! My friends' children got very fancy shoe bags, pillow cases got embroidered hems.........if it stayed still long enough it got embellished!!!

Personally I love this one. I am an experienced sewer and bought this last year, it meets all my needs and I think it would be ideal for someone to learn on before commiting to an expensive machine.
The quality and stitching results are excellent, very easy to thread and change stitch etc.

Does this machine do button holes? I have an really old machine, but this one looks nice and simple (and cheap) to get my DDs used to sewing
