Microsoft Licensing and work

Hi
I am trying to understand the policies in regarding buying a laptop that will come pre-installed with Windows 7 (or maybe 8). It will be mainly for business use. The company will be buying me the laptop but I have been told to go out and buy it along with Microsoft Office. Having read Microsoft website it is talking about volume licensing etc but I am not sure about the licensing if buy separately. I understand the existing set up is that all hardware supplied by a IT company that also offers support and they take care of the relevant licensing. This is tied into a contract with many months to go. Their quote for an additional laptop was silly money so is not an option.
So, if I buy and laptop with Windows 7 (or 8) installed, is this ok to use on a daily basis as a work machine?
Likewise, do I need to look at a certain package for Microsoft Office? Presumably Office home is not an option but would the Home and Business or Pro versions be ok?
Thank you in advance for any comments.

Do NOT buy office360, AFAIK it only lasts a year before you have to pay for it again
Buy whatever version of office suits your needs.
What version are you using at work? maybe getting an older version can be cheaper?
You can use the windows for work, licensing is AFAIK not an issue - getting your IT people to assist you if anything is wrong or allow it on the network etc may be.0 -

There's no commercial limitations for the standard versions of Windows I'm aware of, just different features and how you buy the license.Likewise, do I need to look at a certain package for Microsoft Office? There's a comparison chart on wikipedia that shows which versions are allowed for commercial use:

thanks mttylad.
I am wary of office 360 myself so not going for that this time.
Office will be 2010 or maybe 2013. Relaxed on which really as both more than adequate for my needs. I didnt think you could you home/student for mainly a work machine but maybe I am wrong.
Wish Microsoft just gave a nice summary.0 -
Thank you Johnmcl7
