Thanks for that advice. They are totally useless at my job centre and when you want something explaining all they do is tell you to phone the regional office, they never explain it themselves. It doesn't take 5 minutes to just go through it with you and tell you what is happening, I thought that is what they are there for?

Can I say that JCP staff are not BDC staff, they are not trained in benefit so that is why you have to phone the benefit centre. JCP staff are there to help you to help yourself to look for work. Please do not call them useless just because the system is as it is and the staff have not receive any training. How can they explain something they may not fully understand?
  • Just phoned them now and spoke to a very nice lady who explained everything in "normal" terms. She said the first 6 months of JSA are paid out of your Nationanl Insurance contributions, after that it is paid by the government. She looked at my claim and because I had filled in both contribution and income based claims at first then there is nothing to worry about and I won't even notice the transfer over.

I wish they would have explained it like this in the letter because it would have made things so much easier for me, instead of using all their technical jargon. It's a big weight lifted from my mind and all I need to do now is find a job. I've applied for a coach drivers job yesterday at a local coach firm which I'm qualified to do, so just have to wait for them to get back to me. Will give it a few days and if I don't hear anything I will give them a call.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I hope she didn't say that - you can get the first six months without it being means tested if you have paid NI contributions in the relevant years. It's not paid out of a "pot" that yours - NI doesn't work like that.

After six months, you can still get means tested JSA but it depends on what other money is coming into the household.
