pop up ads

I've just got a new computer with windows 8. I keep getting pop up ads at the bottom of my screen. You know the sort of thing - you've won the jackpot/ipod etc. I've switched the pop up blocker on and the screen filter but they keep coming up. Has anyone any ideas how I can stop them?

Have you got anti-virus, firewall and malware scanners on your PC? I'm not an expert but sounds like you might have malware. Try downloading Malwarebytes and running a scan.

Just windows defender at the moment. I looked at malwarebyte but it seemed to want me to download a lot of other stuff too. Have to say it only seems to be a problem with IE in firefox it doesn't seem to happen.

Malwarebytes don't bundle extra software with their download, and don't allow official download sites to bundle extra software either.

Add an adblocker too, best thing I have ever downloaded.

In this situation, adblockers may treat the symptom, but won't cure the cause.
