PCN issued with incorrect registration number - am I in the clear?

Hi all,
I've been issued with a parking ticket for being on double yellows first thing this morning (got home from work at 1am, street lights switched off and I didn't feel safe walking possibly 2 streets further to park elsewhere - meant to move car early but forgot) however, the registration number on the ticket is one digit out to my actual registration plate - does that mean it's invalid?
I note that they've also taken down my tax disc number, which obviously relates to my car - does that make a difference?
Also, I live in a permit zone and another car was parked without a permit (and a tax disc that expired 30/11/13) at the same time but didn't receive a ticket - so the warden didn't walk the full length of the road either! Can I complain about that?
Thank you!

  • As they will not be able to contact you via the DVLA its as good as dead. They are not allowed to reissue a ticket, so just sit tight and wait to see if the NTO arrives. it should not but if it does you have a good appeal point.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.
  • As PtP said, if it's a council ticket and has the wrong number on it, then it's fatal for that ticket and can't be enforced. Even if they have photos of your car from which they can get the correct registration, it doesn't alter the fact the original PCN is incorrect and thus dead in the water. So, do nothing.

Whether or not someone else "got away with it" is irrelevant. If you want to complain, then report the out of date tax to DVLA (though they should be aware if it's not renewed anyway). Expired tax discs on display will be a moot point shortly anyway.
  • Thank you for your replies! I was hoping that would be the case!

Can't help but worry though, what about the tax disc number? Can this be used despite the incorrect VRN?

(I reported the out-of-date tax disc and lack of permit a week ago - nothing seems to have been done, though)

No. The PCN itself must be correct when issued, and can't be reissued later when they realise their mistake.
