A lockshield valve controls the flow of water from the rad.

They are used to "balance the system" so that each rad gets its share of hot water. They are usually set up on installation and not touched again.

The other valve is used to turn rads on and off

    Why do you ask?

Its just I've purchased some thermostatic valves for one side of the radiators and need the lockshields but wasn't sure whether I could just use non-thermostatic valves as lockshields or I specifically need to buy lockshields, if you know what I mean.

The lockshield will allow you to balance the flow so that each rad gets its fair share of hot water.
On one of the downstairs rads you should fit a lockshield with a drain off so the system can be bled easily if the need arises.

I take it you're doing a bit of DIY?

Yeah, you could say that - though i'm only changing valves & lockshields on existing ch - from what I understand then I specifically need lockshields?

    Yeah.
But only fit them on the return side of the rad.
