Yep, this'll be the "Blue master key" era. I think I'd almost be tempted to leave it unlocked, to save yet more damage to glass/locks.
Getting a proper alarm fitted won't cost a fortune - a couple of hundred quid max. But, of course, that could easily be put into the budget to replace it with something with more inherent/perceived security.0 -

Beat them at their own game. Gallon of petrol under the bonnet with No1 spark plug fitted to it (actually, it won't matter which plug you use).
Leave it unlocked (to avoid lock / glass damage) with the keys in (to avoid ignition switch damage) and wait for the racket
