Monitor takes forever to come on

Hi all, I wonder if anyone can shed any light on very recent development.
I have a Samtron 94V LCD monitor and a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 display adaptor.
Last week while scanning with AVG and when my screen saver kicked in the monitor went blank. Thought it had just gone to sleep, but it didn't seem to want to wake up.
Rebooted in safe mode and couldnt find a problem.
When I now boot up it can take approx 5 minutes for the monitor to come on.
If I switch the monitor off, the same thing happens, another 5 minutes before I can see anything.
A couple of times I have had a warning on screen "optimum mode not selected" and had to unplug it from the mains for this to go away.
All very anoying so any thoughts much appreciated
