Help! washing machine problem

Options
Hi fellow MSErs,

I've got a five year old Indesit washing machine and just recently we've noticed a "screeching sound or like metal rubbing when it's spinning". What seems to be the problem? I didn't get any extended warranty on it. Does it mean that it's nearing it's life span or is there something else that could be done. Any useful tips and advise needed. many thanks.

  • Could be the bearings going.

many thanks for the very useful link. I will now try to investigate the problem without attempting to repair it.

Try oiling the bearing, or even giving it a skoosh of WD40 or olive oil- anything that will help it lubricate the balls or rollers that are in the bearing.

don't overdo it though, and clean up and drips, don't want to leave any excess oil lying around near electrical equipment.

Bearings aren't expensive, it's the labour etc that will let you decide whethe r it's worth it or not. 5 years isn't bad for an indesit.

We have decided if it comes to its "grand finale" we probably just buy a new one. It's been a long story with experiences about washing machine 5 years ago but calling for repair man/engineer, waiting for them to appear on appointments, days without washing machine to be repaired (especially if you have small children) is just too much hassle to bear.

Thank you so much. Been sat with a full machine all afternoon panicking about how to get it sorted. Just looked on the site you recommended and hey presto! the machine is now drained and the washing is spinning.
    Brilliant.
