Incorrect reg on council parking ticket

On New Year's eve i drove to work and parked in a council pay and display car park. I rang up to pay to park but came back to my car and there was a council parking ticket on the windscreen. The money hasnt gone out of my account, so unsure what has happened, but i thought id pay the fine and complain afterwards as i dont feel i can prove payment, only a phone call which anyone can fake.
so i just come to pay the fine, and ive noticed the registration number on the ticket is wrong. They have put my car as 56 rather than 58. There are clear photos of my car and tax disc, showing the reg, so what does this mean for the ticket? should i still keep my £25 to one side to pay the fine, or will this be overturned due to the details being taken wrong?

Don't pay! An incorrect PCN is fatal for them, and it can never be enforced. For a start, when they look up the details with the wrong reg, it won't be yours which come up. If they compare the PCN with their photos, they'll spot their error, and that should be an end of it.
If you do get a Notice to Owner, then go to Pepipoo's Council Parking Tickets & Clamping and Decriminalised Notices forum, and start a thread there.0 -
Wrong reg no is fatal.
They cannot issue a corrected PCN.
can you pay on-line at the councils website.
If so, double check by entering both the regs nos. The PCN no should be accepted as valid, your actual reg no should be refused as not valid0 -

Just to agree with the above, this will have to be cancelled by the Council so ignore it for now (keep it) but let us know if they send a Notice to owner as we can give you the words to reply with.
Re the bit above in bold, Orford didn't mean to actually PAY (just to clarify, he meant can you access that webpage, is the PCN showing?). NOT 'PAY'!PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
