How to rehome a rabbit when no rescue centre or vet can help

Hi All,

I am trying to rehome my 2 year old rabbit as unfortunately due to a change in circustance I can no longer give him the attention he needs. I have contacted a number of rescue centres and the local vets but no one can help. It's always the same story, they are really full, its frustrating as it is taking up a lot of my time and no one can help. I am trying to be responsible and rehome him the proper way rather than putting him up on gumtree but with every one saying no, I no longer know what to do.

Any suggestions before he goes up on gumtree? even then what should I be looking for when someone contacts me?

Thanks

    Please try the
RWAF they're on facebook etc too - http://www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk/
rabbitrehome.org.uk - including the forum theyre a very very helpful bunch

Please try and avoid gumtree etc as you might not be certain about the person and they're plans for your bun

Edit, where abouts are you based?

Thanks, I will try them, I am based in London. I am willing to drive him to anywhere within reasonable distance also if someone would have him but no one seems to want to help :(

I know it's hard but please please don't use gumtree, I would hate to think of where you rabbit could end up or what it could be used for, there are loads of unscrupulous people just waiting on people advertising for new homes for their pets.

Please don't put a living animal up on gumtree as though he was an old piece of furniture.

Are you absolutely 100% sure you can't keep him? You've only had him two years, have things changed so drastically since you took on this responsibility?

Why don't you tell us what's happening to make you rehome him, and we might be able to come up with some solutions that mean he can stay and you can fulfil the commitment you made.

I'm not sure of places IN London as I'm in Hertfordshire but I've used The Rabbit Residence in Cambridge - The lady in charge Caroline is wonderful and very dedicated

Fat Fluffs, a bit further out in Birmingham but they were also good http://www.fatfluffs.com/

A bit of travel but if they're able to help I'm sure it will be worth it for peace of mind. The lovely people on Rabbit rehome might also be able to help if there's a travel issue, members can help with bunny runs

    Hi Person_one,

its more the fact that I dont think we can care for him properly and it's not fair on him. He currently lives in my spare room,, which is a nice big room so there is space for him to run around, I have put toys and carboard boxes in there alongside his hutch. He is litter trained also. The problem us that when he is out he destroys everything by chewing so we have to supervise him at all times. I now get home from work at around 7:30pm, by the time dinner is done, my son's homework checked etc it is almost 10:30 and I am ready for bed. My son is supposed to let him out when he gets home from school but almost never does. This means the rabbit is stuck in the room for a few days at a time on his own. There is no way I can get another one for company. His cage gets cleaned out once a week if he is lucky as my son has to do this and he always forgets. Weekends we are almost always out so that means he is again stuck in the room again over the weekend. At times no one has bothered to check if he has water or not. To be honest I feel really guilty about having him there but I just dont have the time to care for him properly and no one else does either. I feel really sorry for him and would like someone who can be at home with him

You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time

I had something like that for my rabbits, they mainly lived free range in the living room, but when we were eating or just wanted a bit of a break from them running all over us then they were popped in there, it's also where they slept overnight.

Have you considered introducing a second rabbit for company then? Why is it not an option? They are social animals.

I'll be brutally honest, I think rehoming should only ever be a last resort, you owe it to that animal to try everything and really put in the effort before you give up and get rid. It sounds like your son is shirking here, that's not the rabbit's fault! His old is he?
