I do not know about Mars bars specifically. As I have not got access to their costings. No one on this forum would admit as they are confidential.
However when you do low fat products. Just look at the cost of meats. The higher the vl normally it costs more. For low fat products you will use lean cuts hence more cost.
Salt is very cheap. Using salt replacing ingredients cost more.
If some one has the current and previous ingredient dec I could see where the cost changes might have occurred.
There are times when products may be cheaper. Eg you. Replace fat with water eg mayo.
It can vary from product range to product range0 -
You don't eat Cadbury products anymore because they were bought out by Kraft. How bizarre.0

All the fatties will do is buy two bars to make up for it!
Thats why Mars Confectionary (and others) are towing the "healthy line", they have nothing to lose....good publicity in that they are being responsible towards their customers.
Plus the added bonus of people buying two instead of one pack...double profit.:T0 -
Along the same lines, !!!!!! have they done to Smarties? Not had them in a few years but DD had a big tube at Christmas and I offered to help her eat them. They are horrible, not at all chocolately, quite dry and generally ick.0

I know they replaced all the colouring with "natural" colours - which is why blue ones disappeared for ages and then came back. I don't know about any changes to the chocolate though.Cashback / Freebie Sites I Use:
Quidco :: BzzAgent :: The Orchard :: Ipsos :: Toluna :: Latest Free Stuff0 -

It is not bizarre at all, I support British institutions and manufacturers and Cadbury was one of those. Kraft initiated a hostile takeover meaning that not all shareholders were happy to sell but they forced it through anyway. Kraft promised to keep certain sites open when they were negotiating the purchase of Cadbury and then immidiatley went back on their word once the sale was complete and closed one of the sites they promised to keep, resulting in many job losses for British people.
On top of this, they are americanising the brand, changing the shap and feel for the chocolate and immidiatley replaced fresh milk used in the chocolate (remember the proud advertisements of a glass and a half of milk in every bar) with powdered milk to reduce the costs.
The products have changed and are poor quality now and the company is an American leech that was just after the superior recipie for its Kraft brand.0 -
Does anyone recall Mars bringing out a '30% lower fat' Mars bar some years ago?
Richard and Judy had it on their morning show (that's how long ago it was), it cost more and was smaller. R & J showed the viewers how to get the same result from an 'ordinary' Mars by promptly chopping 1/3rd off the end.
It never really took off (not sure if it even made it nationwide to the shops) after that.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -

Lots of the food industry has told the government that reducing fats, sugar etc is not good for business (may cost more, do not eat as well).
But they are under pressure to do this.
Its double edge sword.
People are not happy with the eating quality as mentioned numerous time above if they change to reduce fats and salts, etc.
However the government and newspaper on the other hand will say its there fault people are fat.0
