New student house with 1 non student not declaring

Daughters moving into a different student house on Saturday and I'm just wondering if this should be of any concern:

There are 5 rooms 3 of the students have already been living there before my daughter and her friend move in there on Sat.

One of the present students is at the end of her final year so she will no longer be a student and is starting a full time job as a psychologist. This girl is now letting her boyfriend move in her room as he is a student starting his new cource in September. Her name is being taken off the tenancy and her bfs name being put on there instead. They are going to share the room but as this is a student house it should really be council tax free. They arent going to declare shes living there this is why they have taken her name off the tenancy so it stays a student house she she wont have to pay council tax.

The landlord is aware of this. The tenancy will only show 5 of them, the students, and an amount in rent to be split by 5 of them and that all bills and utilities will be split by the 5 of them

They didnt know about this till they went round recently to check on somethimng should they be concerned at all?
Thanx

  • Not your problem at all she is exempt from council tax so she wont have to pay a dime, not ever. However if she shops the guy hell be taken to court as he should be paying single occupancy on the house so he will be eligable for the full 75% of the bill and given the fact its a 5 bed house it wont be a small bill.

Hmm, there will be 6 people living there, and the rent and utilities are to be split into 5?

The 5 people paying rent and utilities are all poor students?

The one person in the house with a full-time job will be living for free and be subsidised by the others?

I'll tell you what, she will be brilliant at her job as a psychologist if she can get people to fall for this.

Agree with Yant1....Your daughter is not at risk.

I was a student whilst my wife was working, I'm quite familiar with the Council Tax rules and regs.

As for whether this is mal practice then yes, but its on the other girl's head, not the other tenants.

It is ILLEGAL, and the fact that the others are agreeing to this is possibly collusion.

Why is your daughter willing to pay a fifth of the total bills when there are six people living there?!!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • She will have to make him pay his share of the bills, otherwise shell definatly shop him ;)

As for the rent thats between them and the landord the landlord is perfectly within his rights to demand another set of rent. This isnt your problem if he does or doesnt charge this though.
