there is no figure. It depends on your personal circumstance and the LHA rate/rent figure
  • How do they work it out then?
  • Google for LHA + your local council to find the amounts for where you live.

If you're under 35 then you're only eligible for the shared rate.

Then go through the benefits calculator on http://www.entitledto.co.uk/

From lots of factors, including property size entitlements, the area, the income of the tenant, the age of the tenant, if the tenant is severely disabled, etc. For social housing tenants, whether they have a spare room is a factor in the calculation.

There just isn't a simple formula out there that says at £x income a person can achieve maximum HB, there are too many variables.

It doesn't work like national benefits like tax credits where a person can easily figure out what they are entitled to just by scanning down a table for their household income and seeing what they are 'due'.

Give a projection. They should use that figure for 13 weeks - then you complete an income and expenditure form showing your actual self employed income and expenditure - they use that figure for 13 weeks - and so on until they have 52 weeks self employed figures - they use that for a year so your current years HB is calculated on the last financial years self employed figures. Once a year you provide self employed figures.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.
