I completed Today

Hi All,

I completed today and have just been having a look around my new place, I had a look at the meter and it appears I only have one meter for Gas and Electricity, is this normal ?

Also, I havent the foggiest who provides me with Gas, Electricity etc and am concerned if I dont notify the right people, I will be cut off, equally I dont want to keep paying for the previous owners supply.

The same applies with BT and Sky

any help would be appreciated
regards
Amit

Hi englishdesi - mazeltov ! Don't worry, nobody will cut you off without a series of warning letters. However, the vendor who sold you the property should give you this info - if you have no contact details, ask the EA.

Never heard of one meter for both Gas And Electricity - again, ask the vendor. Take readings of all meters NOW. The vendor should have done this before s/he left - you'll get a bill soon enough, don't worry.

    Congratulations, relax, enjoy...

Congrats on reaching completion! We are in the process and had to provide our solicitor with details and copies of all utilities to the property..........perhaps they could advise you if you can't contact the previous owner.

Not heard of one meter - are you sure it does both? our gas meter is tucked at the side of our house partly hidden by a bush

Ive never heard of a combined gas and electricity meter either. Does not sound too safe to me either, they tend not to mix well.

As daisyroots said take the meter reading now and if you can take a photo of the readings too just in case.

On a related note... does anyone know if it's possible to read your own water meter? I have no idea where it was put (I live in a flat) although I know we have one! We will be moving out in the next month (hopefully!)

    Hey,

We completed on Friday and i let the gas and electricity people know last week.

However no one told us the electric is on a meter...so it was on for about 2 hours then went off ! The emergency funds had run out, and on the front it says insert a key to top up etc..except no one left us a bloomin key!! So we were stuck all weekend with no electricity!

Also, ive never heard of a gas and electric meter in one. Are you sure theres not an outside gas meter, as they can usually be a bit hidden too?

I used to have a water meter in my house and could read it myself.

I moved to a flat, and the water company (Severn Trent) told me I had a water meter. I haven't and never did, and I now have a standard fare after telling them so over a few phone calls.

How do you know you have one if you haven't seen it? Are you sure?

just to let you know. Ive worked for the electricity and gas industry for a few years now and know you cannot have a combined meter :-)

it could be a 2 rate electricity meter your looking at with a night and day rate

    Well,

    1. I asked for it (mug! Should have known it would be a bad idea, we don't have a shower...!)
    2. My bills are circa £70 a quarter :(

    Hi all,

Thank you very much for all your kind words, I went back this evening and found a gas meter in a box outside the property, I have taken the readings of both, what do I do with them ?
