Potential Redundency

Options
Hello,

I had a conversation - very informal - with my boss the other day, and she mentioned that she would possibly look to make me redundant/hand me my notice in a few months.

Currently, I am employed part time along with another person to cover one full time roughly, I and the other employee work 24 hours a week, though the other works on a '0' hour contract, I am contracted to 24 hours a week. She mentioned the viability of employing both of us as opposed to one person working full time.

I'm not sure what my rights are here, she is aware that I am studying, plan to leave in August/September and don't particularly enjoy the job anymore - though I am good at my job, the only one who does it and has experience in the company of it (accounts/bookeeping) and she fully intends to employ the new person in this same role.

Is she allowed to hand me my notice to take on this new person who I would have to train for that matter? The other part timer currently performs HR duties and isn't performing this job well.

If you need any more details to help me just ask - I've worked for the company for 2 years and 7 months.

What are my rights here, can they choose to let me go next month, or the month after? Please bare in mind I have a strong, friendly and personal relationship with my bosses so I don't want to go in all headstrong causing them problems etc, but I want my job protected if I am entitled to it as I need the money and want to carry on earning till I need to leave myself as finding new work would be a hassle, and possibly unviable on the salary I am on currently with the hours I work.

Thanks

Paul
