Virus software to get?

I have been given a pc that has been previoulsy used. I want to install software that will protect it against trojans etc.

Are there any good free ones that you suggest/recomend or is the better protection from paid ones?

The most popular one on here is AVAST (free) followed by AVG (also free)
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?

    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I use ESET Smart Security, i think it's the best. I've used most of them :)

Not quite ditto but Eset or Kaspersky and its cheaper to buy an old licence for Kaspersky and upgrade to current version .
    Circa £5 for KIS .

I used that, but only because I got a free year's subscription. They regularly get good results in tests (same scanning engine as NOD32).

Now I use Panda Cloud. Seems to do the job. Lightweight.

    +1 to Avast.

    Perfect free anti-virus.

Use Avast or AVG not both... Defeats the object and it will be terribly slow.

I used to use AVG. But now use Avast antivirus. Comodo firewall.

I run malwarebytes and spybot sometimes.

One tip.. Make sure file extensions are shown. Stupidly MS have the default set to not show them.

Then you download a file and it says yourmusic.mp3 and later find it wont play because is yourmusic.mp3.exe and you just infected the computer.

When I last checked 18months ago AVG was regarded as 'rubbish' and Microsoft security essentials was the one everyone was recommending...

That changed whilst I've not been keeping up to date?
