I have been given a pc that has been previoulsy used. I want to install software that will protect it against trojans etc.
Are there any good free ones that you suggest/recomend or is the better protection from paid ones?

Use Avast or AVG not both... Defeats the object and it will be terribly slow.
I used to use AVG. But now use Avast antivirus. Comodo firewall.
I run malwarebytes and spybot sometimes.
