Disability benefits for Autism

Hello all,
My son was diagnosed with High Functioning ASD/Autism a couple of years ago. I have never made a claim for any sort of benefits for him and was just wondering if his condition is something that we could claim for? He is 9 years old now. I work part time at the moment until April when I will no longer be working. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

  • You could put in a claim for DLA if your son has care needs above those of any other child of his age without a disability.

The national autistic society and cerebra both have good guides the the DLA application process.

If your son gets the care element at middle or higher rate you will be able to claim carers allowance for yourself if you earn less than £100 per week.
  • If you claim working families tax credit, this would also be enhanced if your son is awarded the high rate of care until he is reviewed and or up to the age of 19.

If you receive any rate of DLA for a child, you can claim the disability element of child tax credits.

Thanks for replies. I've had a look at the suggested websites. Unfortunately I stopped receiving child tax credits last year so I'm not sure if I would get anything from them.
