When should i get P45??

Im leaving my current job next week and payday is at the end of the month my new employer says I must bring my P45 with me on my first day however my current employer says he can't give me my P45 until my last pay has been processed at the end of the month.

Should my current employer pay me early? Ie the day I leave? As otherwise HMRC will think I have two jobs wont they? Because my new job will be paying me at the end of the month too!

My current employer is pretty rubbish and in the 4 years iv worked here iv never had a payslip or p60 or even a contract.

Thank you :)

You usually end up on basic rate tax; ask your new company for a P46 to cover until you receive your P45.
  • Funny you should say that, I am in the exact same position only I haven't approached HR yet. I'm not bothered about getting paid early, however I don't want to get hit with emergency tax upon starting my new job.

    Any help would be great.

Issuing the P45 with or just after the final payment is run is the normal practise for most employers. This often results in the P45 not being available until after the new employment has started. Your new employer should know what to do about this there is a new form that guides then about what questions they need to ask of you and what action they should take, you can see it here
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/starterchecklist.pdf
This form has replaced the P46 though you may hear it called to a P46. It essentially askes the same questions. This form will allow your new employer to use the emergency tax code if they pay you before the P45 arrives or HMRC advise them of your tax details.
One word of warning about the emergency tax code occasionally it happens that the last payment you receive from your old employer and the first payment you receive from your new employer taxed on emergency fall in the same tax month (run from 6th of one month to 5th of next inclusive ) then you will underpay tax which will be adjusted when your full tax details are known to your new employer.
When you do get your P45 give it to your new employer.

Why would you not want to be on emergency tax for most people it results in the same or nearly the same tax as they pay normally. If you do not have a P45 and do not give the details required for your employer to use emergency tax then you will pay extra tax until you either get a P45 or HMRC advise tax details to your employer.
  • I think it will depend on the company you work for. I left my last role in march 2013 and still haven't had a copy of my P45.

I have tried on several occasions to request it but all I got was that they have posted it to me.

A P45 is only of any use in the tax year that it's issued, so one from March 2013 would serve no purpose now,

thanks for all the advise everyone, guess I will have to wait until the end of the month for my P45.

Now we will have to see if i actually get my wage slips! 4 years I have been here and never had one! xx
