Postage raising.

I purchased an item costing £80 and the postage was £5.50, now I've been sent an invoice via eBay charging me £20.22 postage. This takes the item over £100 meaning I could pretty much get it new for that price. I want to cancel the sale as that wasn't what I'd agreed to but the seller seems to be ignoring me. Where do I stand with this? To be honest it seems completely crazy that it can be changed like that at last minute. I don't want to get a mark against account but am also unwilling to be taking for a ride like that.

Cheers

Are you sure the shipping costs you saw were to where you live? So say you live in Ireland there may be added costs, for example. Or the seller could be outside of the UK and the postage costs may have been within their country and there may be added costs to send to you in the UK.

Did the description state any postage and if so was it the same as what was stated as postage in the listing?

We both live in UK. I live in Bristol, he/she lives in London. Details just say the item will be cleaned before being sent. I've used eBay on several ACC's (mine and families) for years and have never come across this. It would be funny if it wasn't so annoying.

Was it an auction or BIN?

Is it possibly they realised the postage would cost more than they thought so they invoiced you for more?

There is a possibility that it is some weird glitch.

Does seem strange. Why didn't you pay straight away with the right postage costs? Not judging just asking.

*Sometimes* you can edit the postage cost yourself in the sales record and pay for it, but its rare you can do this. (That said seller usally can't change postage cost after either)

Another possibilty...is that they have differnet delivery options and *one* of them costs £20.22...and one costs £5.50 so it might say £20 but when you go to pay you might be able to pick how you wanted it delivered i.e express delivery or 2nd..to change it to the £5.50
People don't know what they want until you show them.

    You can.

Sometimes when sending an invoice, the postage options flip to put the most expensive one at the top. It's a real pain, so check to see if there are other postage options available.

The auction ended at 3am so I was sleeping then (which as a side note may explain the low price for the item, it does seem a crazy time to end an auction) I've checked and no options for different postage. Thanks for the replies, I half posted just as a warning I don't know if a new system has been put in place and didn't want people to get caught out. While I've used eBay for years I don't use it daily so didn't know if this was a reg new thing.

Any who cheers for listening to me rant, I'll let ya know what the seller says.

It could be that the seller changed the postage as they didn't like the price the item sold for and they're hoping to gain it through postage instead.

I was wondering if it was an auction or buy it now? If an auction they may have mistakenly not priced postage to include the right insurance value. I've done this myself before when an item has sold for a higher than expected value and to post cost more to insure properly...but I didn't pass the cost on to the buyer as it was my mistake.
Many thanks to everyone who posts competitions and works so hard to provide all the answers!

This is what I thought, but if they were going to do that they should of reserve priced it but prob didn't want that fee. And in reply to Fly it was an auction. So you may be right aswel, but if that was the case they really should of contacted me.

    Cheers.

True, or a higher start price. Sadly a lot of people don't care what they should be doing though they just want a start price that is low, no extra fees and if it doesn't go high enough they're full of excuses (or possibly in this case, extra costs).
