vegetables - to grow or not?

Hi. This sounds a strange thing to ask but I can't make my mind up. 2 years ago we dug over a small area of our lawn to make a vegetable
plot. It's sadly mostly in the shade on clay soil so is very wet in the winter and bone dry in the summer. Now I enjoy actually growing the things, seeing the shoots and getting excited (green beans, onions, sprouts, baby tomatoes and courgettes), but once they have grown, they tend to stay in the ground as no one fancies them...! As we speak, there are 6 sprout plants at an angle (from the wind) in the garden slowly rotting whilst we buy sprouts from the shops..:(. Its the growing I like. Should I try again this year or give up? What would you do?

Why don't you eat the food you grow?

You might as well plant some nice flowers, or give the veg to your neighbours or family if it's the veg part you really enjoy :)

I guess its because I'm a fussy eater. When I got married (25 years ago), the only veg I ate were potatoes, carrots and peas. It's taken me 45+ years to try tomatoes and will now eat them chopped in meals but not raw. I enjoy the growing and planting process but then am not confident enough to actually try them. Stupid I know.
  • I know someone who has an allotment, but whose wife will only use tinned/frozen veg. Takes all sorts. If you enjoy growing the veg, then carry on. But is there a neighbour/friend/colleague who would like to eat the fresh veg? Probably for free, but they might get you something to say thank you! :-)

Well, to answer your question, what would you do? I would give up to be honest.

I also love growing from seed and every single time one germinates I :j for joy :D

However, what about growing salad things, although you will have to deal with the shade part. Another thought is what about flowers?

TBH I would say either grow what you and your family will eat AND get out their and pick it and use it up, or go for plants and flowers.

Would you get more use out of growing herbs?
