In a pickle

After some advice please.

I've been using checkmyfile.com to keep an eye on my credit report as I'm really trying to sort it out. I have four defaults from a long time ago, 2 of which are satisfied. In a couple of years they should all be satisfied and the 6 year time limit should be up. However, a mate told me I should also check experian as they sometimes have different data reported. I did, and I find a great big CCJ on there, along with just one of the defaults reported on the other files.
Now, I know when this is from, as all my debts are from around the same period in my life; I wasn't in a great place, I had drug problems, and was in an abusive relationship, and I basically ignored every letter I got. But I honestly thought they'd just stopped chasing me for it (I've read about debts that can get statute barred and thought this had happened) I didn't even realize it had gone to court. It was from a local council for damage done when I lived in their property. Now how do I approach this? I have since got myself a very good job that this would really interfere with if it came out. The CCJ 6 year period is up next month. Do I approach the council and tell them I want to pay, or will they take me back to court if I do that? If I go to court I will have to tell my employer which is something I want to avoid at all costs. I've worked my !!!! off to get in the position I'm in now, and seeing this has just sent me in a tizz. One step forward, two steps back :(

If the CCJ expires next month i would personally forget all about it. Im sure others on here will disagree with me but i cant see any point in paying it with a month left on there. The damage has already been done. another month is going to harm nobody.

    Hope this helps
  • The CCJ will have to paid whether it's now or later but if you're worried about it disappearing from your credit files I'd personally leave it.

If you already have a CCJ you cannot get another one for the same debt so there is nothing to tell your employer about.

After 6years the CCJ will drop off your credit file and will not reappear.

In terms of enforcing the debt against you - after next month the creditor would have to go back to court to get permission to enforce the debt after more than 6years - and give a good reason why they didn't choose to enforce within the 6years.

As the debt has a CCJ it will never become statute barred.
