Charlie Brooker made a very good point about it when he said that if they wanted 'benefits street' to be all about community spirit etc then why call it 'benefits street'? The answer is ratings. They want it to be as controversial as possible so people watch it. It's reckless in my opinion
Aside from the name, I thought it was interesting. More community spirit than on my street, where half my neighbours wouldn't take a parcel in if I was out!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I've not seen it. No interest. I personally dislike that kind of tv. Was asked to pursue 'characters' like this for channel 4 last year and hated it. Just made me feel dirty. I don't really know what programmes like that are trying to say about the UK. In all honesty it really worries me that this is the kind of stuff they want to make. It's cheap, exploitative, headline-grabbing tosh.
A lot of my mates were discussing it at the party I was at the other week though so clearly it's a hot topic. I just think we need to stop demonising the poor for the sake of ratings. Development teams need to use their noggins and come up with something betterMy thoughts exactly....just made for TV nonsense!:mad:Charlie Brooker made a very good point about it when he said that if they wanted 'benefits street' to be all about community spirit etc then why call it 'benefits street'? I do think that their primary aim was to make controversial TV and cover this with angle of the community, and to some extent they have reflected the community spirit in a positive way. But sadly there are parts of the UK that are like this, and I hope it promotes debate which should include government social policy as well as the benefit culture and the apathy of second and third generation unemployed.100 -

You cant beat a bit of self indulgent depression so long as it has a time restraint.“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

Point taken SSM but I feel shows like this (and Skint etc) are tapping into a cultural zeitgeist of poor bashing. I worry that it's not encouraging debate at all. At least not beyond the armchairs of the middle classes.
A request to debate the causes of food poverty was laughed out of the House of Commons recently. I genuinely feel cheap to make telly like this is not helping matters.
