I would guess it's the lack of brainpower you need to use, even TV drivel like Jeremy Kyle gets your braincells doing something!

I get a flight, perhaps book the first night but then just go round hotels and see what the best deal is. If you ask to see the room they show you the best one and you can often bargain. If you are also able to check internet prices (or research before you go) that is helpful. Most 'turn up' queries beat the internet but there are some occasions, especially with a cashback site, where you do better saying you want that room but will book online unless they are able to beat the online with discount price. This does not work at peak times near the sea, but apart from when we bumped into an unexpected festival (and just went on to the next town) or found ourselves in a two-hotel town, it has always worked for us. We book single rooms.
I have done this a few times but now health is getting worse I can't cope with this travelling alone unless in the usa with car.
If going somewhere new I book forst 3 days and then choose whether to stay on or try different hotel. Hotel I have booked is somewhere I have been before and strangely enough do not take desk bookings. I wanted to book longer last time but had to do online.
If dd managed to extend return flight I will spend last couple of days at the posh hotel I want to try next time just to check out location and meal costs if I don't book AI.
Not even sure if I am feeling excited at the moment as feel quite ill and auto immune problems are playing up.
I do know I will have a relaxing time chilling with my kindle once I am there and that is the main reason of going. That and the dry heat helps my joints no end.
