My son purchased a dressing gown for his mother as a christmas gift
he paid on a debit card over two weeks ago, the dressing gown was missing its belt, and as she had already had one for christmas she returned it for a refund, the lady in the shop said that my wife may have removed the belt in order to return it.
The problem is my son is away in uni so my wife asked for a cash refund as the funds would have long since cleared she was refused and offered a credit note, she politely said if your accusing me of removing the belt this is not the type of shop I would like to do business with.
should the shop offer a cash refund as the funds have cleared or is it illegal as stated by the stores assistant manager.

I'm not sure if it is a legal requirement or not, but I'm yet to come across a shop what will refund in a different way to the original payment method.0

They can insist on refunding by the method paid, your son is the one who has a contract with them not his mother so they technically don't even have to offer her a credit note.0

This (unless son was issued a gift receipt of course). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
