If OP and MUM were not customers of TSB they were correct in not opening an account as discussed (same rules apply to Executors accounts).
They have a duty to ID all new customers - so OP do you have any accounts with another bank?

I have held my main bank accounts with TSB for over 40 years. That is why I went to them.

Did your sister try Bank of Scotland to see if they were any help?

A smaller branch based provider might be more approachable?
Virgin, Yorkshire or Scottish BS all have branches in Edinburgh.

My sister has not as yet gone to Bank of Scotland. I think she has been waiting for me to test the water with TSB. I have a cash isa with Virgin so maybe try them.

UPDATE - have spoken to TSB head office who tell me they do not have a dedicated POA department (which I find hard to believe). However, they do think it will be possible to open an account on behalf of my mother (in her name with POA attached to it).

They have asked for various documents (principal POA document, letters from DWP re change of address, a letter from the Care Home stating this is my mother's permanent residence, and certified copies of two bank statements from her accounts at RBS).

Once I have gathered this information together I see the branch manager where I hold my accounts and everything should be set up. I reserve judgement until I know account has been opened!

I think the question had been whether you had any accounts with any other bank. Having "main" accounts with TSB for 40 years would not prevent your having accounts elsewhere.

However, it seems TSB will be able to accept your mother's money now. If you are concerned about the £85K limit, why put that much into an account in the first place? It will be earning interest straight away, taking the funds over the limit. (That is unless you put it in at 0%.)

We will not be putting the max of £85,000 into the account for just that reason re the interest. I do have accounts elsewhere but they are operated in a different way to my main TSB accounts. The reason I chose TSB is so they have a profile on me rather than my mother.

We have encountered nothing but difficulty over the last 18 months with POA and RBS. It resulted in contacting the Chief Exec of RBS, Financial Ombudsman and compensation being awarded for the total incompetence of RBS. I still don't think they realise how much distress they caused not only to us, the Attorneys, but to my mother who at that time was in the throes of being diagnosed with Alzheimers with next to no competency.

Banks generally need to waken their ideas up re POA as many more people in the future are going to require to invoke this for their aged relatives.
