Ceramic hot water bottles are fab, keep the heat in really well, you can get them quite cheaply on ebay.

I'm a firm believer in the hot water bottle approach. I have one with a cover like an elephant, which means that it fits snugly down the back of my leggings with the trunk sticking out to keep it in place. ;):p:o

I just have to remember not to answer the door with Ellie stuck there. Not only does she give out strange sloshing noises when I move, which are guaranteed to scare the postie, but it's a novel fashion statement should I have to turn round for any reason. :D

Thanks, sometimes you see them in CS too...

You do get used to a colder house, from having central heating to not having it was a huge change for me, and I'm a child of the 50's, but now I can't stand over heated rooms.

Inspired by this thread, I bought an oversize super-fluffy fleece from New Look at the weekend. A £7 investment is a lot cheaper than having the heating on if I am indoors during the day.

Only another 8 weeks or so and the worst will be over :)

bedsocks ! I don't have an electric blanket - instead I have a thick wool fleece underneath the bottom sheet. A fluffy blanket is almost as good. I've noticed memory foam mattresses are too hot (for me) to sleep on - do they keep you warm in winter, does anyone know? What you have underneath you helps keep you warm, and applies to sitting as well.

My memory foam mattress is great and never feels cold to the touch - it's the sheets on top that feel cold! (Time to invest in some jersey cotton ones methinks!)

My CH hasn't (touch wood) broken down this year - my flat was a balmy 7oC last winter when it broke, the place leaks air and heat like a holy bucket leaks water! The hazards of rented properties.

I usually don't feel the cold but this year I'm sharing an office with my boss who is from much warmer climes... He constantly complains that anything below 22oC is cold and didn't bat an eyelid when I was sweltering in 27oC in the office last week! As a result I've started wearing jumpers elsewhere in my building at work as I'm starting to feel the cold, I must be acclimatising to sitting in the heat all day lol.

A few weeks ago I bought a 'teddy fleece' from Lidls (£6.99) to wear around the house and I have been very surprised at how warm it is. When I get cold I do the zip right up and have a cup of tea it doesn't take long for me to start moving the zip down. I'd look a fright but I only wish they sold trousers to match.

My boiler broke down in June last year so I've had no heating or hot water for 6 months or so now. I'm glad this winter hasn't been too chilly!

I'm not planning to get it fixed, going to save up for a new boiler instead as I'm tired of my current one breaking down every year. The feeling of a new boiler with a 5 year guarantee will be heaven!

The plus side is that my energy bill has dropped to around £50 a month haha! The cheapest it's been since 2006. :rotfl:

  • I know this makes me sound really old but in 1963 (really cold winter) the inside of my bedroom was -3 deg C. I had a job to persuade my mum to let me borrow an electric fire so I could do my homework in there. Now with a well-insulated house me and OH only need the central heating (virtually unheard of in those days) on for about 4 hours in total split up into 3 sessions. I am disabled now and don't move about much (no dancing for me) so I sit in bed to watch TV.

I got those for myself and my daughter. We were both surprised how warm they are. I think I should have got us 2 each as we're living in them!

Also, Missy cat, the stray who's come to live with us, really likes cuddling up to my fleece!
