We have not CH, or rather we can't afford it. We use a small oil filled rad which we let heat up the room then turn the thermostat on, it costs a lot less than our storage heaters, the biggest factor in keeping the house warm is when we open and close the curtains, you need to draw the curtains as soon as it starts to get dark (like now) because during the day sunlight will come through the windows and warm up the rooms, we've been experimenting with "free" heating using a loaf tin, six candles and a casserole dish, it surprisingly makes all the difference, pop some hot water bottles in the bed a few hours before going to bed, this will stop them from getting damp and open the oven door after cooking to release a blast of warm air around the house.0

I have been working on cold adaptation on and off for a couple of years - so that I can swim in the sea more easily and feel less cold at home. Your body definitely adapts over time. The best tip I've found is to take brief cold baths or showers all year round (..yes, I know!) - I do this and before Christmas I was out shopping in jeans and a short sleeve T shirt when everyone else was wearing coats! I can't bear a hot bedroom anymore. It really does shift if you keep persuading your body that it must accept that it's not going to be warm all the time.
In theory your body makes more brown fat when exposed to cold - this fat is able to burn excess calories as heat - hence the idea that it might help with weight loss. The cold baths make you feel fabulous too!February GC 173/200

I used to do this, and I definitely FELT healthier. I was a keen wild swimmer. I miss it greatly.
I just don't feel up to it now. Ironically we have a large pond I could swim in, but I'm just too nervous now. That I'll be too cold. I went in in a few days in the very warm days last summer and froze. Its like I'm a different person. I've broken ice on swimming pools to swim before
