The other morning when I came in from work the house was 10 degrees, I was in shock as not used to it that cold. I didn't dare have the boiler on when out (usually comes on an hour before getting in from work) as had been making an very loud noise.
Anyhow, over the next few days I wouldn't put it on unless in the house and I can't stand it on when asleep, so upshot was, it was hardly on.
I don't know if the temp has got warmer, or if I got used to it, but haven't had the temp up to 17 since other than if very cold. Most of the time i've had it at 13 - 15, and today had it switched off and the back door open all day, but it has been nice here today...northeast). You may find when you get used to it it won't be a hardship and it will feel fine. I think we get so used to heating and higher temperatures. I've bought one of those crazy onesies for times i'm lounging about and it's colder...and they work. If pennies are sparce you could always try stitching a pair of tracksuit bottoms to a top and see if that helps for when it's colder still.
And moving definitely helps...not that I mean you aren't, but when cold wizz up and do something quick to heat up a bit.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0 -
A hot water bottle on your knee is good under a blanket when sitting. You may like to take a look at the 'preparing for winter' thread on here for tips on how to keep your home warmer.
it may be worth you just heating the room you are in for an hours food prep or whatever task you are doing.
I grew up in a very cold house but there was always a good fire in one room to get warm by. Getting dressed in front of it when I was a child was bliss, although I think I broke the land speed record getting there across the cold lino floor in bare feet!0 -
When you've had the oven on and finished leave door open to let heat into the room too.Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.0

I made a fleece blanket top (like a poncho but I did arms as well) and have another fleece blanket poncho that can go over that - with a hot water bottle instead of a cushion in the small of my back, I'm really toasty when sitting in 15 to 18 degrees temps. Can't go outside to the bin in it all though, I look like a jedi.
For feet, I use big woolly socks and oversized crocs (the cheap version, not branded ones!) for general house wear and if it's really freezing when I'm sitting at the computer I have a pair of those wheat slippers you can warm in the microwave.
Not the classiest look in the world, but I do save on heating a bitI believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

A cushion on your lap can really help when you are sitting in a cold room.We always plomped one down on our legs when we were small.
I sometimes wonder if that isn't half the point of them.0 -
Is your home suitably insulated? I've not had any heating on at all for the past few days and I'm sat here in a vest & leggings. I pop on a cardigan when I feel a little chilly but it soon comes off again once I've warmed up. Current outdoor temp is 10C which, in my opinion, isn't cold enough to warrant heating unless you're elderly and frail otherwise health compromised.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0

. Part of My home is newly insulated to modern levels as of last year...(sort of, there is a complication )
But when you don't have any hearing to warm it up you have effectively made a cool box, not a 'thermos flask' with your insulation.
My house remains cool all summer, as I am guess it was build hundreds of years ago to do, and then hold heat in (which tbh it doesn't do too badly , and we're helping it do better and better)0 -

Mine's not a new house but it seems to hold the heat very well in winter whilst remaining cool in the summer. Best of both worlds I guess. I s'pose I ought to add the caveat that I'm a woman approaching a certain age so perhaps I don't feel the cold quite as much as others right now :rotfl:“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -

The point is, you have to put heat in for it to hold heat. To have the fabric warm, rathe than just the air within it briefly
Mine holds heat ok when its been warmed through, but it takes a good few days, to feel. 'Warm' when all guns are blazing' and a week for the 'fabric ' of the house to start having something to 'throw back out' or retain itself rather than just the warmed inside IYSWIM.
If you have, say, south facing windows ( we only have one) or low ceilings ( we only do in one room) these help. We have high ceilings, north and east facing windows mainly! Ideal in summer!0 -
I snuggle up in fleecy blankets and hot water bottles in the afternoon when it really does get chilly. I also light a candle as it makes you feel spiritually warmer.
Though our heating is set to a thermostat but quite low in the day - I know its cold when my adult son appears downstairs to mage a brew with his duvet wrapped around him!!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0
