Furniture for a conservatory

We're moving to a new house which has a conservatory, and we've not had one before.

We're moving in Feb so won't be using the conservatory until it gets warmer, but will be looking for furniture for it in the next few months.

Current owners have a wicker sofa suite in it. When you search "conservatory furniture", it all seems to be wicker which I'm not keen on, and is expensive!

Any tips for 'normal' furniture that will survive in a conservatory?

I'm guessing things fade like crazy, so light colours are sensible so it's not as obvious.

I'm also guessing that fabric instead of leather sofas are sensible, as leather will either get freezing or sweaty to sit on in a conservatory!

If it stays unheated over winter, can normal sofas go cold and damp and mouldy inside?

I noticed that the current owners had a decorative bowl of what looked like salt granules on their conservatory coffee table... I'm guessing this is intended to reduce condensation?

  • I'd wait until you move in and see what its like in Feb and March. If it is as damp as an otters pocket you'll need something that will stand up to it.
If on the other hand it quite dry then normal furniture maybe ok. Leather is ok in a car so why not in a conservatory.

We had sofas, wood tables and all sorts in our conny. It just looked like a living room. That wicker stuffs !!!!!!.

We had a big shaggy rug on the floor for the cold times spent in there, a leccy heater heated it up in a few mins. Never had a problem with damp, the furniture was cream by the way.

Thanks. :) The conservatory has a radiator which I believe is on the central heating system, though we probably won't bother heating it in winter. We're moving to a bigger house so the gas bill's going to be big enough already!

Just set the rad to number 1 just to take the edge off it, you won't really notice an increase in bills

Same here. We have a lovely laminate floor in ours that looks like real floorboards. We have red sofa and chair and a cream rug. It looks very much like another living room and we havent had any damp at all in ours. My favourite room in the house as it is so clean and calm.
