The inedible yellow/green split peas mystery

I bought some yellow split peas, and was looking for a tried and tested recipe.
I was disappointed to find this thread, stating that nowadays no matter how much you cook them they will still be inedible:

And then looking more widely, this blog:
http://ronsrants.wordpress.com/2012/09/23/theres-something-seriously-wrong-with-green-split-peas/

These are slightly old posts, I was wondering if it was a bad year, or if people are still having the same problems.

I never have a problem with them. Yellow split peas are one of my staples.

I soak for 12 hours then boil for 35 minutes in ham or gammon stock. I buy the Sainsburys ones or the Tesco wholefood type.

I turn them in to the base for soup and fritters and also veggie burgers.

I've also used the sainsbugs ones with no problems, but the last packet I bought, think it was L!dl, definitely need an overnight soak otherwise they do turn out a bit crunchy.

I've never had a problem with either colour as long as I've soaked them properly.

Tesco or Sainsburys I never soak and they are perfectly fine.

I usually use them for soup - I don't soak them. However they don't cook in 35 or 40 minutes.....more like 2 hours.....

The only time I've had an issue is when I thought chana dal and yellow split peas were the same thing!!!
