Trainline Tickets not accepted at ticket barrier

I recently bought ticket via the Trainline however when I went to put it through the ticket barrier at Victoria it wouldn't go through. Am I missing something here or has anyone else had this problem?

    What tickets?

Several gates at Victoria are programmed to not automatically accept Advance Singles.
It appears that Southern, maybe Southeastern too, like the opportunity to check that the passenger is boarding their booked train.

This is nothing to do with where you bought the ticket.
  • Yes it was an advance cheap ticket. Thanks for that, much appreciated.

I'll just make for the nearest helpful ticket inspector the next time at the gate to show them my ticket ;)

Yes, ticket machines at platforms 15-19 are more likely to accept a car park voucher than an advanced ticket ;)

Just remember the tickets are probably also available directly from the TOC website, with the benefit of no booking/card fees.

I had this problem with a batch of tickets I bought online from londonmidland last year, which were not advance. Highly annoying as it included a transfer in London on the tube on a Sunday evening and had to wander for ages to get a member of staff to let me through!!!

Perhaps as a money saver they purchased via a cashback website :)

    Really?

I've been through ticket barriers on the underground and national rail in London quite literally tens of thousands of times, and on every single occasion bar none there's been a member of staff close by to open the gates for people.

And yes, I did feel a bit depressed typing that ;)
  • Sometimes the printer just doesn't encode the magnetic stripe sufficiently within tolerance for it to be read by a barrier.

But setting barriers to reject Advance tickets is normal practice. The barriers also don't know the full routing database so have a smaller database of tickets they can pass, and anything else is rejected for manual check.

Health and safety, and disability discrimination rules, require all ticket barriers to have a staff member supervising them, or they must be left open. In a few little-used locations they are supervised by CCTV with assistance available via intercom.

With East Midlands Trains you get the best of both worlds.
