According to that article, the Norwich and Peterborough are also going to charge new customers.

The article is wrong where it says
N&P’s Gold Classic account and Cumberland Buidling Society, for local customers, are now the only banks to offer debit cards that do not add on a "loading" when you take out money abroad, outside of Europe.
Nationwide FlexPlus does as well (there's a £10 per month fee for the account but that includes worldwide family travel insurance, European breakdown cover and other stuff like mobile insurance).

True, but FlexPlus does charge for purchases overseas, making it a non-ideal option.

Just take the cash out of a ATM and buy what you want ...... no charges that way. That's what I do, as was costing over £350 a year in ATM fees. Rather pay £120, even though I cannot use the insurance part of the deal.

Yes, though if you have Flex+ account you can get the Select credit card which is fee-free for purchases.

I use the Clarity as my first choice card for cash and purchases, because it's Mastercard who seem to have better rates than Visa, but the Nationwide cards (debit for cash, credit for purchases) are good backups. Also useful when I need more cash than the Clarity daily withdrawal limit.

I still have a Santander Zero credit card which is my registered card for PayPal, but never gets used physically. Guess the simplest option would be to dig out the PIN and start using that...

  • The article is also wrong where it says:

N&P’s Gold Classic account...requires customers to pay in around £500 a month and have a balance of at least £5,000, otherwise there is a charge of £5 a month.

The requirement is to pay in £500 a month OR have a balance of £5,000.
  • Gutting news. We're off on honeymoon in April and one of the key reasons we have metrobank is due to its use abroad.
Am seriously considering leaving them after this news. Had pretty rubbish customer service from them of late anyway and the benefits are now disappearing!!
