Don't hesitate to let me know if I've made a mistake! What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.0 -
MSE has not saved any multiquote posts, so I'll see if I can do this from memory.
Barney, you're amazing; MaggieM I think: quite right, every AF day is a victory, even if our target and our achievement are a bit tangential in a month with 12 out of 28 days being weekend days (thanks for that Shaggy); Lulabelle: tapas and AF beer go fabulously together (there are masses of AF beers in Spain, a different brand for every bar it seems, plus three in most tiny supermarkets *heaven*); Fake Plastic Twee: have a fab holiday in Italy if I forget to wish you Bon Voyage closer to the date of departure; and Green Karen: if there isn't already a forum thread for building your own home from the day you resign from your job to the day you move in please could you start one. Actually, please could you start one because I'd be fascinated, and I'd subscribe like a shot.
I'd also like to say that everyone who contributes to this thread is lovely and I'm grateful and proud to be one of us.
And here are my thoughts on going on holiday with five people who drink. I absolutely love Barcelona and enjoyed almost every second of the week to the absolute max. Fell in love with Miro's work, despite the fact that I've always had a problem with modern art. I spent a few weeks/months ex-drinking money on the most fabulous silk scarf and an art nouveau cuff bangle to remind me of the most beautiful building(s) I've ever seen and will remember until the day I die - in other words, booze money jolly well spent. The scarf was eye-wateringly expensive and worth every euro, too, and it didn't give me a hangover and the bangle is for every day, not just special dressing up occasions. Fab.
The downside of it: Just because someone who's had a drink or three thinks that what they're saying is funny doesn't mean it is. And if it's personal - their judgement is impaired and just as compromised as if they were driving after three generous bevvies, and no one thinks that's clever. I hadn't realised that before, but it takes the sting out of comments a couple of people made, even if it took me a few days to work that out. In some ways life was easier when I was pi**ed after dinner with everyone else but I'd still rather be sober and not risk saying something unkind. OH was fab and so was one of the couples; the other couple both individually upset me and I'm finding it very difficult to be as fond as I was of them before the holiday. I'm very aware that used to be me, though, thinking I was hysterically funny.
The only time I missed red wine was with the pizza we had as soon as we get home after a very eventful journey with a medical emergency on the Easyjet flight back. We were diverted to get the chap to hospital (thank goodness there were two doctors on board) in France, and then the rail chaos thanks to Doris kept us in a teabar at Bristol Temple Meads when we'd much rather have been chuffing home down the track. Fair play to what used to be British Rail, they kept everyone informed about delays and were unfailingly helpful.
24/28 please, Shaggy.Better is good enough.0 -
Re Feeling like Feb hasn't gone so well - there were actually a lot of "weekend" days in this Feb : 12 out of 28. January and March however had/have 13 weekend days out of 31 days. It does make a difference I think iyswim.
I think it's made a difference as well - I normally take a few of my non-AFD days on the weekends and this month I haven't felt able to. So it's been a harder than usual month that way.0 -
Welcome back HB, glad you enjoyed Barcelona apart (from the boring drunks!). I will try to look for some house building forums, it's a great idea.
Reporting in 23 AF days, will be drinking tonight as booked this cheese and wine night months ago, they're really popular (and today was my last day at work so nice to celebrate). Not particularly looking forward to drinking which surprises me. I know I don't have to if I don't want to so will play it by ear.0 -

still on 20/26 as we went out last night. Not too bad - 2 g&t's before dinner and 2 glasses wine (not large!) with dinner. It is clearly only when we go out that I drink (as thurs night I had walked past one of my fave french cafe bars seeing people drinking lovely red wine - made me want some and knew we had a bottle at home. But got home, ran a bath, made a cuppa and had cuppa in bath then wasn't bothered about wine after that) and as the boy has been working stupid hours this week (he went back in at 630 this morning even though he is a mon-fri bod!) he really wanted to go out, and tbh, so did I!
Anyway, boy is out tonight and I am staying in with the cat (sometimes love it when it's just me and the cat as he can then sit next to me on sofa for cuddles and doesn't moan at my tv choices or my smelly feet!) so def won't drink so reckon I will get to 24/26 so 24 booze free days out of 28 in feb which isn't bad.
The good thing is, I am now more conscious of what I am drinking. In the past (and cos dinner was done by 930) I'd have wanted to go somewhere else for a drink no matter how much I'd already had, but now am content just to come home.
Need to have a think about my march target. Know we have a massive night out on 4th with friends who drink lots so that will def be a drinking day and might allow self another couple of days for march in case we go out, but going to try to continue in this vein - mainly AF days (and always in the week) and when I do drink, not going nutsI want to be a writer0 -
