I've been asked to help move existing information from a 4S iphone to a new 5S using itunes? & my pc. (the apple shop is too far away to visit again). My pc is not apple.

Can someone please explain the procedure? (in simple terms) so that I know what to expect?

Thank you

Hope you have already registered on itunes - an email id that gives you apple account to link apps on one or mode apple devices.

icloud - online backup and sync website from apple (upto 5GB store is free)

You can backup and 'sync' your existing data online using icloud on itunes account on your 4S.
That will sync all your apps, personal files, music, videos etc etc.

If you data is over 5GB, then you have to either use
    a) icloud paid service and buy a storage over 10GB for a cost
    b) install itunes on your windows PC and do a manual backup using a cable to connect your phone and PC.

Purchage your new 5S, and then install itunes/icloud or backup from itunes via icloud or your computer.

    hope that helps.

    hpuse - thank you :)

I haven't got iTunes on my pc but am happy to have it.

The new phone isn't mine but my niece's. Am I right in thinking that any iTunes account will need to be set up in her name for the 'system' to work? Or do they not link like that and I can get set up before she arrives?

Sorry.... I'm not very tech savvy

Nevermind - me neither a techy!
itunes account is just an email id that apple will use to identify you on all their systems..

Once you register, you can then attach your apple devices. For example you may have an iphone, ipad, mac, windows PC etc etc with itunes clients installed are all examples of 'devices'.

If your niece is already using an iphone (4S) then most likely she has an itunes account (usually her email id with a working password). If that is the case all you need is download itunes client to your windows PC and ask your nieces itunes email/password to do the backup and sync. Once you purchase your new 5S, itunes will automatically detect your new device and will ask you to select apps that you need to copy over.
