How much should I pay for their mistake?

I took an alloy wheel to a local place for a quote on repair. They called me back the next day and said it would cost £50 + VAT. I told them to leave it and I would collect after work.

I went down after work to collect the wheel and they advised that it had been done by mistake and to call back in the morning to speak to the boss (i.e. about negotiating a better price).

Question is, how much should I pay? I didn't want them to do the job as I had managed to locate a used wheel for £30 fitted (from a reputable salvage yard that I have bought from for over a decade).

I can imagine they are going to offer something silly like 10% off but I'd just like some opinions please.

  • Hi,

when you see the wheel, and happy with job, wait and see what he asks for, if less than £30, then try to knock another few pounds off, if he wants more than £ 30, tell him to keep it and get the one from scrappy.

You could say though, that you can get one for £ 25 and negotiate from there.

As above, but have some evidence, e.g. the advert on your phone - it'll strengthen your position.

If you buy one then you are back where you were before you started so you could just tell him to keep it. Having said that it might be handy to have a spare. So the top price is £30, they have made a mistake and owned up so I wouldn't punish them too much.

What do you feel is right and fair to offer?

I have a spare wheel but being a Yaris its a tiny little space saver. I've been using my wife's car for work since the beginning of this week.

There are no prices on their leaflets. The one I have simply advises you to call up for a quote on repair. When I did they advised to come in (which I did and they said call back in the morning... seems to be a theme with them).

If they charge me £35 (maximum) I'll be happy.

If you can't come to a deal make sure they pay you for the wheel if you are leaving it there, its worth £6-£10 in the scrap depending on size.

Legally speaking the wheel is yours.

As you only left if for quotation purposes and instructed them not to work on it you don't have to pay them anything for it.

    Morally it's up to you.

If it were me it would depend on whether I thought it was a genuine mistake if I thought they had done it in full knowledge that they had been instructed not to in the expectation they could charge full price anyway.

I would say give me my wheel back. Then i would leave with it. If a builder bulldozed your house and then built a mansion on it without asking would you let them?
