I've been keeping old pasta sauce jars and lids but other than putting tea lights in them I don't know what to use them for.
They're the 500g size which is too big for jam (in this household anyway!) and we don't eat pickles or chutneys. Any ideas?

    Things I keep in jars....

    Buttons
    Screws
    Nails
    Herbs
    Hair bobbles
    Hair grips etc
Bits of ribbon for wrapping presents.
    Candle sand.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

as calicocat said, I too use them for odds and ends ,also useful for sticking paintbrushes in to clean when I have done some furniture renovations (another little hobby of mine)I like to give old clapped out furniture a new lease of life if I can with either varnish or stripped and repainted. My youngest DGS all have odds and ends I have renovated, bookcases, bedside cupboards etc smartened up with a lick of paint.I am definitely a make -do & mender sort of person.
  • I use them in the garden as mini cloches, for paint brushes, DH has a shelf full in the shed for different size screws and nails
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I use some for making pickled onions, or pickled eggs. some are used in my craft room for pen or tool containers.
my favourite way of recycling them is to let the kids use them for craft projects.
so far they have 'decoupaged' them with scraps of pretty papers and PVA glue, spattered them with glue and then 'Glittered' them (looks really pretty with a candle light inside), they have glued coloured string (string dipped into poster paint then allowed to dry) on them in rows or patterns. covered them in Pollyfilla, dried them then later on painted patterns on them (use those as vases!). I am sure I will think up more uses for them!

I tend to just wash the very few I use and put in the recycling. However I always have one tucked away in case I want to drain fat into something for easy disposal. I prefer to store buttons, thread, ribbon etc in plastic tubs. I find the plastic ones with lids from the Chinese Takeaway are ideal for lots of things once they have been given a good clean.

However, I have two or three small Herb Jars with screwtop lids which I find invaluable for mixing salad dressing in when I make it from scratch.

One of my favorite storage ideas ever...screwing the lid into the underside of a shelf so the jar could be unscrewed.

Ideal for people who have just odds and ends if craft stuff in a cupboard or a few DIY things needing optimal storage but not a workroom full.

I always keep a few handy for my kitchen experiments :D

Seriously, a nice big jar is great for HM tomato sauce, pesto, lemon curd, toffee sauce, leftover rice pudding, you name it! I prefer it to plastic, feels fresher as the necks are smaller ergo less surface air contamination and the product keeps for longer. So no waste.

Also handy for decanting spices into. Will also be taking cuttings in a few weeks time and sprouting them in small jars of water.
